Effects of Microclimate on the regeneration of Quaking Aspens, Populus tremuloides
Abstract
Populus tremuloides is a keystone species found throughout North America. P. tremuloides aids the regeneration of eco systems, however as climate changes, the health of P. tremuloides is changing. P. tremuloides populations are on the decline in the American southwest, and with time it could affect P. tremuloides populations in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. In this Study the relationship between tree regeneration, tree death, soil temperature and soil moisture, a one hectare plot was tested to show if low soil moisture and higher soil temperatures were causing higher P. tremuloides mortality rates and low regeneration rates. The study resulted in no significance between dead trees and soil moisture and soil temperature. However, regenerating trees expressed a decline when soil temperature rises.
