Abstract

Life histories of three species of Corixidae found only at altitudes over 2800 m were compared. The number of generations per year varied with altitude. Callicorixa audeni Hung. and Cenocorixa bifida Hung. had two or more generations a summer in montane ponds (below 3100 m) and only one generation a summer above 3100 m. These two species had synchronous life histories in ponds where they occurred together. Arctocorisa lawsoni Hung. was found only above 3100 m and produced a single generation per summer. Where A. lawsoni and C. audeni occurred together, A. lawsoni's development was one instar ahead of C. audeni. All three species overwintered as adults. Some evidence for wing muscle polymorphism in Cenocorixa bifida was discovered in one montane pond (2890 m).
