Phenology of selected cavity-nesting Hymenoptera and flowering plant taxa in the Colorado Rocky Mountains from 2008 to 2010.
Description
Data come from fourteen sites in the West Elk Mountains of Colorado, USA. The study aimed to identify the factors regulating phenology of plants and cavity-nesting insects, and to determine the likelihood of asynchrony between flowering and pollinator emergence under climate change. Numbers of flowers or flowering stems of several abundant species were counted 2-3 times weekly along variable-width belt transects in May-July 2008 and 2009. Insect data are from experimental nest blocks colonized naturally by cavity-nesting insects in 2007 and 2008. Emergence traps on these nest blocks were monitored 2-3 times weekly in 2008 (for 2007 nests) and 2009-2010 (2008 nests) to characterize insect phenology. All Hymenoptera, excluding Ichneumonoidea, were identified to species, if possible. A reciprocal transplant experiment was conducted using nest blocks at two of the sites in 2007-2008, and a study of nest-height effects on emergence phenology was conducted at one site in 2008-2010. For each individual nest or nest block on each sampling date, we recorded the number of individuals, their sex, the number already dead at the time of capture, and the experimental treatment (when appropriate). Dataloggers recorded temperature and light hourly at each study site; these data are deposited separately with Ecological Archives.
