Summary

As public-land users and individuals interested in the Management of National Forest lands, it is hoped that this information will help in- form and stimulate discussion concerning Multivle Use Management direction involving undeveloped areas. The Chief of the Forest Service has directed that all undeveloped (roadless) areas of 5,000 acres and larger be evaluated on their resource potential. Areas of less than 5,29) acres will be considered if they are contiguous to an established Wilderness or Primitive Area. For this review, a road is defined as one that has been constructed, disre- garding existing "four-wheel-drive routes" and “parallel wheel tracks" that could be effectively closed and would thereafter become obscure. Consequently, some areas shown on the enclosed maps will contain numerous "four-wheel-drive routes". The enclosed maps block out areas within the Gunnison National Forest which meet the Chief's definition of an undeveloped (roadless) area. The numbers designating each area can be used for reference and are an overall numbering system for the whole Forest. A tabulation showing the name of each area and approximate acreage is also enclosed.
