Description

This is a 1 m resolution map of the relative "southness" of topographic aspect, computed from the cosine of the topographic aspect using the equation:

cos(aspect_radians) * -1

North-facing aspects have a value of -1 and south-facing aspects have a value of 1. East and west-facing aspects have a value of 0. The original aspect map was derived from a 1m Digital Elevation Model (DEM) for the Upper Gunnison River derived from public LiDAR datasets. The primary data source was a 2019 LiDAR collection for Gunnison County. A small portion of the upper basin was not covered by this dataset, and for those areas, data from a 2015 aquisition was substituted.

Aspect is broken into north-south and east-west components to avoid the common error of ignoring the discontinuity at aspects of 0 / 360 degrees (North) in spatial prediction models.
