Description

This dataset is a styled basemap depicting vegetation canopy structure variables in the Upper Gunnison domain overlaid on high-resolution topography, optimized for fast display on web maps and mobile devices. The underlying datasets are available as part of Release 3 of the RMBL Spatial Data Platform.

The color scale encodes three different aspects of canopy structure, as an RGB composite, coded in the Red, Green, and Blue channels of the composite. Red corresponds to canopy height, with heights of zero represented as dark and heights greater than 20m represented as maximum brightness. Green corresponds to canopy cover or density, with zero density represented as dark, and cover greater than 0.8 represented as maximum brightness. Blue corresponds to understory (0.25 - 2m) cover, with zero represented as dark, and 0.6 represented at maximum brightness. This means that meadows and low vegetation are dark, shrublands are generally blue, tall forests with sparse understory are orange and yellow, short forests with dense understory are green, and tall forests with dense canopy and understory are white.

The download link to this dataset accesses a version of the basemap stored as a Cloud-optimized Geotiff (COG). The web map link accesses a version that can be added to a web map on ArcGIS Online.
