Time of superposition of the Arkansas River, Chaffee County, Colorado
Abstract
Threemile Creek, a tributary to Colorado's upper Arkansas River, underwent two episodes of stream piracy during the Pleistocene. Recognition of the abandoned stream segments and determination of the time when each stream capture took place, permits determination of the position of the Arkansas River during the Pleistocene. This study reveals that it was established in its present channel In Browns Canyon by late Tertiary, thus discounting the suggestion of some authors that the Arkansas River flowed west of Browns Canyon during the Nebraskan stage. The study also suggests that more attention should be paid to abandoned tributary streams when determining the history of a major river.
