Golden-Mantled Ground Squirrel (<i> Spermophilus lateralis </i>) and Yellow-Bellied Marmot ( <i> Marmota flaviventris </i>) Intraspecific and Interspecific Perch Use and Interaction Dynamics in Gothic, Colorado
Abstract
Golden-mantled ground squirrels (Spermophilus lateralis) and yellow-bellied marmots (Marmota flaviventris) can both be found in abundance at high elevation meadows in the Rocky Mountains. Though different in behavior, both species inhabit and utilize the open meadows of Gothic in very similar ways. Both species utilize perches and respond to each other’s alarm calls. Additionally, here in the Gothic town site, both species’ have been studied and recorded for many years. This research project aims to examine how golden-mantled ground squirrels share habitat features and interact with yellow-bellied marmots in the Gothic town site.
