The webfooted rodent deserves some praise, claim two scientists B= are pretty scarce in the Beaver State these days, but it wasn’t always that way. It’s estimated that in the mid-nineteenth century there were nearly a million beavers in Oregon. Today, there are an estimated 68,000. Reasons for the decline: Decades ago, the animals were trapped almost to extinction for their pelts; more recently, they’ve suffered from the reputation of being a nuisance, largely because of their dam-building activities. When gathering materials for dams, they de- stroy valuable trees, and the dams themselves can flood prized areas and are thought to be obstacles to fish mov- ing in streams.
