Gunnison County has a population of approximately 10,000 people con- centrated mainly in the towns of Gunnison, the county seat, and Crested Butte. Mining is not new to Gunnison County, particularly the area around Crested Butte and Mount Emmons which has seen almost a century of mining sctivity. AMAX has been exploring the Gothic-Mount Emmons area for a number of years. in 1976, AMAX extended a road into the Red Lady Basin on the south side of Mount Emmons, near the old Keystone Mine, and discovered a low-grade Page 2 molybdenite ore. Further exploration revealed the presence of the Mount Emmons ore body. MOLYBDENUM Molybdenum (moly) is a silver-gray metal first identified in 1778.
