DOE News Gunnison Mill Site Demolition to Begin
Summary
Demolition of abandoned mill buildings and other structures at the Gunnison, Colorado, Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action (UMTRA) Project site will begin today according to U. S. Department of Energy (DOE) Site Manager Don Leske. "The mill site demolition represents the first phase of site remedial action at Gunnison," said Leske. "This is significant because it means we have started actual cleanup of the mill site itself, a milestone the DOE, the state and the community have worked long and hard to achieve." A subcontract to perform the demolition work was awarded to Landmark Reclamation of Golden, Colorado following competitive bidding by qualified firms. A notice to proceed with the work was issued on August 29, 1991. Rubble and other debris from the demolition operation will be stored at the mill site until a disposal site is prepared to receive them. Current plans call for excavation of a disposal cell on Federal land approximately five miles east of Gunnison. -MORE- Once the disposal site is prepared, the rubble will be transported to the site for permanent disposal along with 535,000 cubic meters
