Summary

length, the beaver prowled with masto- dons. mammoths, and saber-toothed tigers. But those species disappeared with the retreat of the continental gla- cers. The beaver did not. It adapted-— ame smaller—and endured. Had the beaver not endured. Amer- ican history would have been written differently. For there can be no doubt about it—this country was built on beaver. The West was first explored— opened up—by those in pursuit of the beaver’s hide. They recorded not their journeys, made no claims for kings, but they were there. Their trade goods, half-breed children, and language greeted the first “recognized” explor- €rs—men whose wanderings were also justified by the probability of finding new sources of fur—primarily beaver.
