Manual soil CO2 flux, temperature and water content measurements from the Snodgrass and Copper Creek elevation transect
Description
The manual_soil_measurements_2022_2023.csv data set contains all of the manually measured soil CO 2 efflux, volumetric water content and soil temperature during field visits to the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory. In 2022, 16 PVC collars were installed at each site, there are two sets of collars, (n=4) PVC collars that are ~20” in diameter and placed in a 1x1 m square around the soil pit (Collar ID’s 1,2,3,4). The remaining collars (n=12, diameter= 4”) are placed within the forest type at each site, with four transects of three collars spaced at 3, 6 and 10m from the soil pit. For both types of collars, the soil CO 2 flux is measured using Flux Puppy, a field-portable system built around the Li-Cor 800 series IRGA (Carbone et al. 2019) Lids are placed on the collars and CO 2 is allowed to accumulate for 4 minutes (Large collars) and 3 minutes in (small collars). The flux is calculated by extracting the slope from the CO 2 accumulation curve using methods developed by (Trumbore lab). The large collars measurements were taken first, and lids were left on to accumulate CO 2 for radiocarbon samples. The small chambers were measured up to three times between 10:00-16:00 hr. Manual measurements were collected during four site visits in 2022, and one in 2023. Each soil CO 2 flux is paired with manual vwc (Campell scientific Hydrosense) and soil temperature (Thermofisher) measurements at the collars. Vwc measurements were take 3 per collar to account for spatial heterogeneity around each collar. Soil temperature when taken, was taken during the flux measurements. Soil temp1 was taken during the first flux measurement at that collar, soil temp 2 and the second etc..Carbone, M. S., B. Seyednasrollah, T. T. Rademacher, D. Basler, J. M. Le Moine, S. Beals, J.
