Summary Report: Gunnison Climate Adaptation Pilot Project
Description
The Gunnison Climate Working Group is piloting a on-the-ground climate adaptation project to buildresilience of riparian areas/wet meadows – priority brood-rearing habitat – to help the Gunnison Sagegrouseand other wildlife species adapt to climate change in the Gunnison Basin. Riparian areas havebeen impacted by head cuts, erosion, and lowered water tables. These impacts will likely increase withincreased drought and erosion from intense rainstorms, decreasing food and chick survival. Afterprioritizing locations and designing treatments, we are building relatively inexpensive low-techstructures in riparian areas on a few ranches to “let the water do the work” to raise the water table andimprove baseflows to support grasses and insects [...]
