Description

This is a map of accumulated snow-free growing potential (snow-free growing degree days, SFGDD) for the Upper Gunnison domain, derived from daily maximum temperature maps interpolated from weather station and microclimate sensor data combined with Landsat-derived estimates of the timing of seasonal snowpack departure and onset. The original daily maps are also available.<br /><br />Snow-free growing degree-days were accumulated in the 60 days after the disappearance of seasonal snowpack.&nbsp; In the absence of snow, the accumulation period started on day-of-year 60 (March 1st in a non-leap year). To compute SFGDD, daily estimates of temperatures above a base of 5 degrees Celsius (a minimum growth threshold for many plants) were summed across all days estimated to be free of snow cover. Because snowpack insulates the ground surface and soil from low temperatures, this estimate can be a more appropriate measure of freezing potential for snow-dominated climates.<br /><br />This map represents the mean of annual values computed from 2002 to 2021.
